It’s so important to make someone happy

It’s so important to make someone happy

People kept asking me what I’ like to do for my birthday, but somehow I’m always uncomfortable planning some type of celebration for myself. It’s almost as awkward for me than let’s say receiving a cake and all people are surrounding you singing that happy birthday song and stare at you, and you don’t know what to do with your hands, who to look at or what else to do than to smile awkwardly and stare at the ground or said cake. Haha. Love me some cake though!!

So since I am more comfortable giving rather than receiving I planned on making other people happy on my birthday – because it’s just an awesome feeling! The more you spread good vibes the more you will receive. True story!

Most of the time it worked, though many times it was funny to see how people seemed to doubt that 1- I’m actually a good person and want nothing back in return or 2- they actually deserve what you give them. We should all do some more good stuff so people stop being this suspicious. The easiest good deeds to accomplish were the little things.. paying in advance for coffee at the local coffee shop, giving out a bunch of bus passes & super hero buttons for the kids (those smiles!!), signing the online petition to save the Arbutus corridor, signing up for volunteering the the Pride Parade, and leaving coins on meters. I couldn’t donate blood though as I had just gotten a new tattoo. Bummer. Heads up – if you want to volunteer at bigger events or organizations they need you to sign up weeks in advance, do a background check, blood tests (BC Children’s, I do understand that), criminal record check, and commit to a full year of volunteer work. I’m sad to report that the animal shelters didn’t even let me clean dog poop (“You are not trained for this”). Huh??? I cleaned my back alley of trash instead. Ha!

We all can do it – every day! You don’t need a special occasion. Hold the door for people. Say thank you. Be aware and respectful of the people around you. Give out compliments – sincerely. You can be your own superhero! Try it – it feels REALLY good!!

Next year I will prepare a bit more in advance to reach more people, kids and animals. This year, I hope I made a few people’s day & went stand up paddling afterwards. All in all, a super happy day!! PS> Thanks to my lovely friends for the brunch & patio night, as well for all the lovely people who sent text messages & emails! It was the most perfect day – so much love!!! <3
